Project Description

Chrome Hearts

Chrome Hearts as a label was officially established in 1988, but a few years prior, it was in the fetal stages of becoming a small business. It was started by Richard Stark and a couple of his buddies (Leonard Kamhout, a silversmith, and John Bowman, who made belts). They started as a leather-works business and made leather pieces for their motorcycling friends and others who heard about them. Eventually, some small-time directors in LA heard about them and asked them to do costumes for some of their films. Their first big break was making outfits for “Chopper Chicks in Zombietown,” which was a B-movie horror film made in 1989. Coincidentally, one of the actors in the film happened to know the Sex Pistols‘ lead guitarist and ended up introducing the Chrome Hearts guys to the band.

Celebrities who wear Chrome Hearts include: Rappers Jim Jones and Juelz Santana, Mary-Louise Parker, Ashlee Simpson, Lenny Kravitz, Cher, Eddie Murphy, Mischa Barton, Jamie Foxx, fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld, and Cantopop star Nicholas Tse. Rapper Jim Jones of the Harlem, NY based Diplomats apppears in the video for the song “We Fly High” wearing several items of clothing and jewelry made by Chrome Hearts, including one of their signature Wallet Chains. Juelz Santana (another member of the Diplomats) also appears in the same video wearing Chrome Hearts clothing, as does a female affiliate.

History & Story

The Chrome Hearts guys met many high-to-dos in the fashion realm of the LA area and their leather pieces were featured in the likes of Vogue and others.

Founder Greg Chiat was inspired by the gift of a cashmere blanket in 2002 to pursue a niche market. After he made some cashmere blankets for himself, Maxfield in Los Angeles sold some of his samples and requested more product.

The brand was founded in 2007 and expanded into a West Hollywood appointment-only studio in 2011. As of 2011, the brand’s clothing lines were carried in stores such as Barneys New York.

As of 2014, the brand was known for its knitwear, was carried in stores worldwide, had 25 employees and had relocated to a Culver City factory. In June 2014, the company opened up an online store. The brand is expected to open its first store in Los Angeles in late 2014.

Chiat had previously been chief executive officer of niche Australian denim brand Ksubi. In December 2011, Justin Doss of GQ selected The Elder Statesman as his editor’s pick. In 2012, founder Greg Chait was recognized with the $300,000 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award.

Fashion Week

During New York Fashion Week in February 2014, the brand was featured in The Wall Street Journal for its unique artistic installation of its cashmere line. The brand is known for its intricacy, quality, and limited quantity of supply.
